Away from home (fly in/ Fly out project)
Between 2002 and 2006 our practice was involved with the Outback division of general practice NSW (Outback GP’S) fly in / fly out regional and remote services.
On a regular basis our podiatrists jumped in a little plane, 4 seats - yes its little, and headed to the “outback”. Running a regular clinic is run in Bourke, Brewarrina, Cobar, Engonia, Lightning Ridge, Walget and other outback towns in the region.
The clinic services the entire local community but focuses on patients who most need to see the podiatrist. These tend to be patients with diabetes, many with or at high risk of developing ulcerations. Essentially our job was to work with the medical staff in the area and advise how we could best manage patients with these debilitating condition.
We also had the opportunity to bring more specialist care to the area, with podiatrists from Liverpool, Concord, and RPA high risk foot clinics attending on some of our visits to assist with education of the area’s GP’s, hospital and community health nurses and Aboriginal health workers. This left us with more than a taste of the outback, but a wealth of experience in relation to managing high risk diabetic feet. In particular working with patients an medical staff alike, to get the best results possible for you.
