Social distancing demo or Is it Dr Brenden’s and Ambers new Tictoc video to an ABBA tune? (It’s actually outtakes of our latest video on Keeping Patients safe)

We take your safety VERY seriously. And let’s be honest our team want to be as Safe as possible during this time as well!

Social distancing is the very first part of the safety measures we implemented for our practice now almost 4 weeks ago!

If you, like us, are at times riotously frustrated by what you see on the TV images of people way tooooooo close at the beach or in parks! Or even what you can sometimes see at shopping centres, people again standing way too close to each other, you’ll be delighted to know you WILL NOT SEE THAT AT OUR PRACTICE!

We have very firm distancing policies. So much so that we now ask all our patients to comfortably wait in their car for their appointments and we call you when our Doctors are ready for you.

If necessary we have a large outdoor covered waiting area, but again this is strictly limited to 4 patients ONLY, and all chairs are spaced 2 metres from one another.

We will be posting more info on keeping you safe in the coming days.

If you’re one of the many health clinics that follow us and you’d like more info or Help, please send us a direct message.

We have had quite a lot of requests from other health clinics for help on implementing safety policies and we are Happy to help - we ALL need to help fight this together. Implementing safety policies is something we believe is paramount!

To our patients if you’d like more info or need more details, please call us on 9673 2987 we love to help.

Coronavirus Update ? – We’re keeping our patients safe

To keep all our patients safe and in an effort to reduce the risk of transmission we have implemented the following steps today in our clinic.

Some of our patients are EXTREMELY vulnerable!

For safety of all

  • On arrival, we ask that you clean your hands with the hand sanitiser provided
  • We ask ALL Patients to Wear gloves while in clinic. (Just like our team do)
  • We are committing to social distancing – we’ve removed every second chair in waiting area. Increasing the distance between everyone in the waiting area
  • Expanded waiting areas to outdoors as well
  • We ask that Friends and Family to wait Outside clinic – we are happy to help those needing assistance. Parents may accompany the young children being treated
  • We ask anyone with flu or cold-like symptoms to postpone your appointment
  • Please report any symptoms of cold or flu on arrival
  • We have increased the already high level of cleaning and disinfecting of all areas
  • Reduced the need for touching door handles and other touch points

These measures designed for your safety, our own safety and the community’s!

These measures have been overwhelmingly welcomed by patients today – THANK YOU! ?

We are committed to doing our bit to reduce the transmission of this virus amongst our community in particular our most vulnerable to whom this may be deadly!

We don’t at all believe this is perfect, we are simply doing our best to keep everyone safe. ?

If you are at all uncomfortable with these measures you are welcome to call ahead to speak to Amber our practice manager or Dr Brenden our Principal Podiatrist.

We realise that this may not be be for everyone and we are happy to recommend other podiatry teams who may better suit your needs. ?

How to cure heel pain at home

How to cure heel pain at home

How to cure heel pain at home

How to cure heel pain at home

Yes, it’s true! By making a few simple changes, many people can reduce heel pain at home! ? Yay!

Heel pain can be horrible! From the first step of bed and the excruciating pain that can be associated with those first painful steps, to sitting down after lunch and rising again and your old nemesis PAIN is back. Some may find their pain increases with the amount of activity or exercise that they do. Heel Pain can look different for everyone

If you’ve read any of our my other blogs, you will realise that unlike many others in the field of foot doctoring or Podiatry, I will reveal that there are numerous types of heel pain! While both heel spurs and plantar fasciitis are the most spoken about, they are also the most commonly misdiagnosed and over-diagnosed conditions. If you have not read my other blogs on this topic, there will be a link below.

I am a Penrith Podiatrist, with a smidge over 20 years experience who sees anywhere between eight and 10 patients every day with varying types of heel pain. Yup, it’s a lot of feet!

At these appointments, we go into great detail on how to relieve heel pain. However, in this blog, I will list some very quick points to start your journey to relief.

How to prevent heel pain at home?

  • Wear good quality, lace-up runners
I prefer quality brands like Asics and New Balance. If you are making a choice, I would look for Shoes in the neutral range, from these brands.
  • Over the counter orthotics or insoles
People with flat feet, fallen Arches or those who have ankles that are “rolled in”. Will benefit greatly from using simple over-the-counter insoles or arch supports.

If you have very high archers or your ankles roll out, you can try these arch supports, but on most occasions, your feet generally require more cushioning rather than support so arch “supports” can often become an irritant. (Sorry, I can’t tell you over the Internet what foot type you have or where you fit.)

Brands I like;

  • ReAlign – now available at most Rebel sports stores and some camping stores and other good quality running footwear outlets and podiatrists.
  • Orthaheel – These orthotic inserts are available from most pharmacists, some department stores and some podiatrists.
  • Formthotics – These are over the counter insoles, they often passed off by practitioners as custom made or customised devices. This is, in my humble opinion, nonsense. Let’s call them what they are, that is, “over the counter orthotics”. They have their place. These are mostly available at some podiatrists physiotherapist and chiropractor

We need to acknowledge The fact that over the counter insoles available from sports stores, chemists or even the ones available at physiotherapists or some podiatry clinics, are in no way the same as custom-made, prescription orthotics available from a qualified podiatrist.

There would be no way anyone would suggest that the reading glasses you can buy from the pharmacy or now some department stores are in any way the same as the prescription glasses prescribed by an optometrist. The same is true for prescription orthotics made by a podiatrist. They have very similar distinctions as prescription glasses. Please don’t send me messages about this, in my opinion, and it’s just silly to try to compare the two as similar.

Gel insoles or heel raises are not the same as over-the-counter orthotics and will in my experience create more problems in the long run, so stay away.

Rolling Frozen Water Bottle or a Tennis Ball

Rolling Frozen Water Bottle or a Tennis Ball GENTLY under your foot

  • Rolling a frozen plastic ice bottle in your arch
Try softly rolling a frozen bottle of water in your arch. Make sure this bottle is plastic. You are best to place a towel over the frozen bottle as. A piece of advice I highly recommend is not pressing to firmly on this bottle as I have come across patients who have increased their pain to the area by doing so. This process works well if you gently roll the bottle in your arch for around 10 to 15 minutes – two or three times an afternoon or morning.
  • Rolling soft tennis ball
Use a SOFT tennis ball! I regularly see patients who have again increased or irritated their heel pain by using Hard or Rigid balls in their arch, all on the suggestions of social media health guru. Lacrosse balls, golf balls, cricket balls should be left for the sport they were designed for originally. Again roll the bottle in your arch GENTLY!  There is a great risk of irritating an already irritated area by doing this too firmly.
  • Immobilise your foot
Many practitioners will tell you to wear an Aircast boot of some type or other. This is generally a bad idea as it completely reduces the movement in your foot. (Note BAD for you). You are much better using some type of laced up running shoe as advised above. You will need to wear these the majority of the time. Wearing these for two or three hours, of a fifteen-hour day, will virtually get you nowhere. It’s like wearing your reading glasses for three hours taking them off and wondering why your eyes get sore after another five hours of reading

What happens if this doesn’t work?

If your heel pain has persisted for longer than one month and you have tried all of the above measures, it’s time to visit someone like me (a Podiatrist). Heel pain can last for many many years; in fact, I had a patient who presented for the first time with me after suffering for heel pain for nine years. Yes, I know you’ve been told it will only last a few months and it will go away by its self. Someone needs to tell this lady because it most certainly did not.

It’s important to note that on many occasions as I said above this condition is misdiagnosed, and it’s essential to see a podiatrist like my good self who sees heel pain all the time! Not all Podiatrists do!

Yes, it’s time for the shameless plug here. I’ve been practising podiatry for over 20 years. In that time, I’ve literally seen thousands of patients with heel pain. These are patients from professional athletes competing at an international level, to young kids who are in excruciating pain. I seemed to have developed quite a knack at helping those with painful, ongoing heel pain.

I also work with a terrific team of highly qualified Foot Doctors. Yes, all qualified Podiatrists who, like me, regularly see the tricky bits of podiatry that most podiatrists don’t get to treat or don’t have as much experience in seeing.

Our team of Western Sydney podiatrists have patients who travel from all over New South Wales to be assisted. From Griffith, Dubbo, Mudge and up to Port Macquarie in the north or near Batemans Bay in the South! We even get people from the North Shore or Eastern suburbs of Sydney!

If you’re interested, please contact our uber helpful, front desk team who will run through what you have tried and what is going on for you right now. We’ll be able to advise you on what is the best appointment or package for you to get you the best relief. Our team can be contacted on 9673 2987, or you can use one of the contact us forms on our website.

I hope that helps. Make sure you head to our information below and our links to look up more information about heel pain, foot types, and other sports injuries. We look forward to making you happy, healthy and active.

Ingrown Toenails Do I Need Surgery?

Ingrown Toenails Do I Need Surgery?

Ingrown toenails do I need surgery?

You probably aren’t as in need of ingrown toenail surgery as you believe you may be.

Ingrown toenails can be incredibly painful. They can be so tender to touch that even the bedsheet or a sock can create pain that makes you wish you could simply remove the whole toe.

Ingrown toenails do I need surgery?

This ingrown toenail requires treatment by a podiatrist

The side of the toe most often first becomes painful then a red discolouration begins and progresses to become looking like a sore with blood, puss or a discharge coming from the area (mmmm yum)

Many people resort to pain killers and numerous Home remedies, hacks or tips provided as advice by great aunt Norma to get relief.

Other patients will head to their local medical centre to consult a GP who diligently provides you with antibiotics to clear the now infected nails. Unfortunately, antibiotics will not fix the problem. You see the nail is “ingrown” and the offending piece of nail acts as an irritant.

Think about having a splinter of wood or metal in your finger if you take antibiotics. Yes, the infection will temporarily go away, but unless you remove the offending piece of the splinter, the infection will quickly return once antibiotics have finished.

The answer to Ingrown toenails?

The answer is a visit to the foot doctor. Yes, one of our highly qualified podiatrists will, on most occasions, be able to GENTLY and painlessly remove this ingrown nail. YES! With remarkably little pain!

Our Penrith Podiatrists deal with the more tricky problems, like infected ingrown toenails than most other podiatrists; who either don’t like dealing with or don’t deal with a lot, so don’t gain the experience and details our doctors do. Our doctors see infected ingrown nail several times a day and undertake a day a week of surgeries for patients with this painful condition.

Ingrown toenails do I need surgery?

Ingrown toenails do I need surgery?

Do you really need surgery?

It is very common for patients to consult our doctors with the notion that they will require surgery to have the infected nail removed.

Come on, we know you’ve been on YouTube and search up ingrown toenails, and you’ve seen the magnificently Gory and gross surgeries, right? As a heads up, the reason you have found those surgeries on YouTube is that they are the most extreme and gross looking surgeries. When you stop and think about it if it was a relatively easy, non-gory surgery, would it have entertained you and kept you watching? Probably not! These videos are the ones you come across first because they are the worst of the worst Humans love a bit of gore.

In truth, the vast majority of ingrown toenails will only require surgery. All of our doctors are very experienced and highly qualified to undertake these types of surgeries. Surgery is only required if these nails are recurrent, ongoing or have reached a stage where regular chairside treatment is not possible.

Again, it’s important to point out that while we understand you feel your ingrown nail is VERY BAD and can be very, very painful. Most patients are very pleasantly surprised that surgery is not required.

The Process of Fixing an Ingrown Toenail

Our qualified, Western Sydney based Podiatrists understand how painful this condition can be.

Our Doctors have an incredibly gentle touch and, of course, use a local anaesthetic if required or requested. The anaesthetic will reduce any discomfort whilst removing the splinter of nail in the side of your toe.

The Podiatrist will use a small and delicate tool to gently remove the little splinter of nail quickly and painlessly. (We understand your worried and convinced we are kidding you) Your toe is then dressed, and our team will give you instructions on how to Maintain the area keeping it clean and reducing any The risk of ongoing pain or infection.

Once the fragment of nail has been removed, most patients will find the nail heals quite quickly, once again reducing the pain from swelling and infection.

Next steps

We realise how painful this can be and as our doctors are generally heavily booked we attempt to leave appointments through the week so that patients like yourself can be attended to as quickly as possible as you’re in pain!

A Step Ahead Foot and Ankle Care’s helpful Front Desk team will run through what is going on for you right now.

What you have tried and will provide you with details of the best type of appointment and package suited to relieving this problem. The team will then work with you to confirm a time that is best to get you in to have the ingrown nail gently removed. It really is that simple!

You can call our team on 9673 2987. We have offices in Western Sydney, conveniently located in both Penrith and St Mary’s with new offices opening soon.
